Core ML is a framework that allows developers to implement machine learning technology into their apps. In recent years, its functionality has spread to generative tools and AI.

According to the Power On newsletter, Apple is going to release a Core AI framework during WWDC 2026. It is a replacement for Core ML, though both frameworks could exist in tandem for some time.

There's also a chance this is a simple rename of Core ML to Core AI to address the primary function of the framework. Apple already offers developers methods to integrate large language models and diffusion models into their apps via Core ML.

Here's what was introduced during WWDC 2025:

Updates to Core ML will help you optimize and run advanced generative machine learning and AI models on device faster and more efficiently. Core ML Tools offers more granular and composable weight compression techniques to help you bring your large language models and diffusion models to Apple silicon.

Apple's big Apple Intelligence feature of the OS 26 release was the ability for developers to integrate its Apple Foundation Models into apps. For example, developers could utilize on-device AI processing to generate text results or other functions.

One of the new focuses of Core AI will be to integrate third-party AI models into developers' apps. It isn't clear exactly how this might be executed, though MCP is a possibility.

WWDC 2026 will likely be quite dense, even though previous rumors suggested the OS 27 cycle could focus on bug fixes and stability. Apple Intelligence and the new Gemini-trained Apple Foundation Models will be front and center at the event.

It has been previously rumored that Apple will further upgrade Siri with chatbot-like capabilities. This will be an addition to the other expected new features that could arrive in the spring before WWDC.

Even a simple shift from Core ML to Core AI could be seen as a significant indicator of Apple's priorities. It seems as if Apple isn't going to simply wait for this AI bubble to pop and pass it by.
