Overwatch Rush is an in-development title that Blizzard describes as an entirely new game made for mobile. Instead of being a first-person shooter, it's a "top-down hero shooter."
For gamers, the main difference is viewpoint. Instead of working in a first-person perspective, players will instead get a high-up viewpoint, similar to team games like League of Legends.
While there are first-person shooters on iPhone, the change in gameplay should make things easier for a primarily touchscreen-based experience.
The initial video released in the announcement depicts a fairly well developed Overwatch-themed game, with the perspective change. However, it's far from release, with it characterized as "early days" in the development process.
While development rolls on, Blizzard has asked interested players to head to the official Discord server for updates ahead of limited game testing sessions.
A return to Apple
Blizzard has a fairly good history of bringing its earlier releases to Mac. Classic titles including Warcraft and Diablo were available cross-platform, but support has reduced in later years.
Though Overwatch isn't a macOS game, despite appearing on PC and consoles, there was a hint that it would travel over in 2017. However, that didn't happen.
Blizzard didn't give up on Apple's hardware completely though. Hearthstone is still a popular title, played on iPad and iPhone.
With Overwatch Rush, will expand its Apple repertoire a little bit more, just not on Mac.
A release date is not yet clear. We have heard that the shooter will be free, with in-app purchases, but that has not been confirmed by the company.
