Selling iPhones without chargers in Brazil cost Apple one second of global revenue in fines

Apple has been fined a tiny $20,000 by Brazil, as the country continues to disagree with Apple's 2020 decision to stop selling power adapters with iPhones.

Government fines are usually quite sizable when dealing with a company at the scale of Apple. However, in one long-running legal disagreement with Brazil, the fine is unusually small.

State consumer protection watchdog Procon-AL has levied the fine against Apple over its continued lack of a power charger in the iPhone box that ships to consumers. Stemming from an environmental decision made in late 2020 that Apple still follows, the fine insists that it is an essential accessory that should be provided.

To the regulator, the lack of the charger puts consumers in a vulnerable position, forcing them to acquire a charger separately, reports Alagoras24Horas. It adds that the move continues to violate consumer law, as well as the good faith of consumers.

Pocket change

The fine itself was originally going to be valued at R$60,976.50 (about US$11,900). However, the figure was then raised to R$101,627.50 (about US$19,800) due to some aggravating factors.

These factors include not only violating the consumer protection code, but also that Apple hadn't tried to correct the perceived problem. It seems likely at this point that Apple is okay with the fine.

Apple now has 20 calendar days to file an administrative appeal on the fine, which will probably cost it more to consider than the fine itself.

Apple has been repeatedly fined by regulators in Brazil over its lack of an in-box charger. In September 2022, the penalty was R$12,274,500, or about US$2.3 million at the time, following a similar R$10.5 million fine the previous year, again over a lack of charger.

The latest fine pales in comparison to those earlier efforts, but still serves as a tiny reminder to Apple that it has legal issues in Brazil. An extremely tiny reminder when put against Apple's size and sheer income level

Based on Apple's Q1 2026 financial results reporting $143.8 billion in revenue, the fine represents little more than a second of Apple's global revenue.

An Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter is sold in the Apple Store for R$219. The total value of the new fine is worth just over 464 chargers from the company's regional store.

For the more expensive 140W USB-C charger, sold for R$1,099, the fine equates to a mere 92.4 chargers.
