iPad Pro with vapor chamber cooling will wait until early 2027

Consumers can expect a long wait for the next version of the iPad Pro, but the 2027 refresh will get vapor chamber cooling, not a major revamp in design.

While Apple is set to make a number of product announcements within days, the iPad Pro won't be among them. Instead, you're going to be waiting until early 2027 for the next iteration.

Writing in Bloomberg's "Power On" newsletter on Sunday, Mark Gurman answers a query about the next iPad Pro and when it will launch. In his response, he tempers expectations of an imminent update, providing a more realistic outlook for the tablet line.

The iPad Pro is on an upgrade cycle that lasts about a year and a half between models, he correctly points out. The latest version, packing the M5, was released in October 2025, and he heard that the next version won't be out until spring 2027, matching the assumed timeline.

Long wait, few changes

While there's still a year more to wait for the model, Gurman also says that consumers should not expect a radical change to the device at all.

The current slimline design was introduced with the M4 chip in May 2024. Since Apple likes to reuse designs for multiple generations, the M5 update in October kept the appearance but changed the internals.

For the early 2027 iPad Pro, Gurman doesn't expect any major enhancements, aside from the upgrade to presumably the M6 chip. That said, the spec-bump update could be bigger than usual.

Apple has apparently been working on applying the same vapor chamber thermal management in the iPhone 17 Pro to the iPad Pro. The change, which enhances the cooling capabilities for the main chip, should help keep it running faster for longer, minimizing thermal throttling.

Gurman feels that change could arrive with the next iPad Pro model.

Mark Gurman has a pretty good reputation when it comes to accuracy. His report also follows similar other rumors and claims about a limited external update, making it seem more probable than not.
