Apple TV’s stated summer 2026 release date of beloved soccer comedy Ted Lasso season four just got more specific, if what star Hannah Waddingham blurted out in a red carpet interview the other day turns out to be accurate.

“August, I think,” she said to an interviewer on the BAFTA Awards red carpet Sunday. Then, turning to the side, she added, “Am I allowed to say August?”

Waddingham, who plays the owner of the Richmond Greyhounds Premier League football club in the feel-good comedy, referred to “our lady Greyhounds” as she spoke to an interviewer from Deadline. That sound like a reference to the women’s team Coach Lasso will apparently manage in the new season. “It’s a whole different deal. I can’t wait for everyone to see what they’ve come up with,” Waddingham added.

But when the interviewer seemed to want to hold her to the August timing statement, she asked, “But what if I’m wrong?” Seems unlikely, given that she sort of asked for permission to say it.

Notably, August also makes sense. At that point, the World Cup will have just ended, in late July. What better time to trot out new episodes of the hit soccer comedy?

January 28, 2025: The beloved comedy series Ted Lasso comes back to Apple TV for its fourth season with a premiere set for summer 2026, Apple said. It’s not a specific release date, but hey, fans will take it. And it comes with first-look photos, too.

Apple TV announced the news along with a first look at the upcoming fourth season. It will see Jason Sudeikis returning both as star and executive producer of the Emmy Award-winning show.

Production is currently underway on the new season, which brings back fan-favorite cast members including Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift, all reprising their beloved roles. The fourth season will also introduce several new faces to the Ted Lasso universe, including Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely.

New season brings major change for Coach Lasso

Season four marks a significant shift for the eternally optimistic American coach. Ted returns to Richmond to take on what may be his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team.

According to Apple TV, the new season will follow Ted and his team as they “learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.”

July 21, 2025: Filming began on the highly anticipated fourth season of Apple TV+’s beloved comedy series Ted Lasso, marking the show’s return after speculation about its future, according to new reports. The production sees Jason Sudeikis reprising his Emmy-winning role as the optimistic American football coach turned soccer manager, alongside several original cast members and exciting new additions.

Original stars Juno Temple and Brendan Hunt have finalized deals to return to the series, joining the previously confirmed core group that includes Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift. These six actors reportedly have three-year contracts, suggesting Sudeikis has mapped out an ambitious new multi-season storyline for the show’s next chapter, as Deadline reported.

New faces join the Richmond family

Apple CEO Tim Cook posted on X.com Monday to say production on season 4 had begun. His photo shows, from left, Jeremy Swift, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple and Jason Sudeikis on set in Kansas City, Missouri.

And the fourth season introduces several new cast members, with Grant Feely taking over the role of Ted’s son Henry after previously appearing as young Luke Skywalker in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The recasting addresses the character’s evolution, as Henry is now portrayed as a 12-year-old skilled soccer player, requiring genuine athletic ability from the actor.

Additional series regulars joining the cast include Tanya Reynolds from Sex Education, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey and Abbie Hern. Many of these new actors are expected to portray players on AFC Richmond’s women’s soccer team, which forms the central focus of the upcoming season.

A fresh challenge for Ted

According to the official synopsis, season four presents Ted with his most significant challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team. The storyline promises to explore themes of taking risks and embracing new opportunities as both Ted and his team venture into uncharted territory.

Production began in Kansas City, Sudeikis’ hometown, before moving to London for additional filming. This approach ties directly to season three’s conclusion, which saw Ted returning to Kansas to be closer to his son.
