As a 15-year Costco member, I’m often asked what makes my membership worth the cost. People expect me to rave about the many perks like cheap gas and travel discounts. (Who do you think arranged my family’s trip to Hawai’i last summer? Costco, of course.) Nobody anticipates the truth, which is actually the freezer aisle.

Costco’s freezer section is what keeps my household running. It’s where I stock up on grab-and-go breakfasts, dinnertime shortcuts, party-ready pizzas, and more. Yet the foods that take up the most real estate in my freezers are fruits and vegetables. This month I’m restocking my stash of frozen fruit, starting with a bag of Kirkland Signature Wild Blueberries.

What’s So Great About Kirkland Signature Wild Blueberries?

Wild blueberries differ from standard blueberries in a few ways: The most obvious difference is in their size. Wild blueberries are much smaller. They have a more intense blueberry flavor and are sweeter. That’s reason enough for me to buy a bag of wild blueberries, but that’s not all that sets these tiny berries apart.

Wild blueberries have two times the antioxidants and more fiber than standard blueberries. These bite-size berries are flash-frozen at the peak of freshness, so that you can enjoy a burst of blueberry flavor all year long.

Wild blueberries aren’t a new item in Costco’s freezer, but now they’re sold under the warehouse’s Kirkland Signature store-brand label. That tells me that I’m getting high-quality frozen berries at an affordable price. The Costco closest to my home in Tampa, Florida, sells a five-pound bag of frozen wild blueberries for $12.99, or 16 cents per ounce. At my local grocery store, I’d pay two-thirds more — 25 cents per ounce.

What’s the Best Way to Enjoy Kirkland Signature Wild Blueberries?

Wild blueberries can replace standard blueberries in most of your favorite fruity recipes. Add them to smoothies like this blueberry-banana smoothie, or blend an extra-thick smoothie mixture and serve it in a bowl with granola and more fresh wild blueberries. They make a sweet addition to breakfast bakes like blueberry muffins, blueberry scones, blueberry buckle, and blueberry pancakes.

Wild blueberries also add a burst of fruit flavor to desserts. You can make an easy blueberry cobbler spiced with coriander, or old-fashioned blueberry poke cake with the frozen berries. No-bake desserts like this blueberry mousse and this Maine blueberry milkshake show that even non-bakers can enjoy blueberry-flavored sweets.

And that’s not all! With dozens more blueberry recipes to try, you might want to pick up a second bag.
