If the San Francisco Giants were looking for some good news out of starting pitcher Logan Webb on Sunday, then consider it a job well done.

Webb threw three innings in a Cactus League game against the San Diego Padres, allowing two hits and one run (earned) while striking out three. The Giants were able to keep the Padres at bay and secure a 9-1 victory.

It's the second Spring Training win for Webb, who probably gave Giants manager Tony Vitello something to smile about after he walked off the mound.

Second baseman Casey Schmitt, infielder Osleivis Basabe, and outfielder Victor Bericoto all had two hits apiece to pace the Giants' offense.

Five Giants pitchers followed Webb on the mound and simply shut the Padres' offense down all game long. It was a great showing for the Giants' pitching staff, which just puts them on a fast-track to be great when Opening Day rolls around.

But Sunday was the first day of March, so Opening Day really is kind of just around the corner for San Francisco and the rest of the MLB teams getting ready to play.

San Diego scored its lone run in the first inning on Ty France's RBI single. After that, though, it was all Giants all the way.

In the bottom of the first, Schmitt's RBI single plated Willy Adames to tie things up at 1-1. Matt Chapman's RBI groundout scored Schmitt to give San Francisco a 2-1, a lead the team would not give up. Grant McCray followed that with an RBI single for a 3-1 Giants edge.

Basabe's double in the bottom of the sixth scored Schmitt and put the Giants up 4-1 at that point. San Francisco added another run in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth to round out the scoring on Sunday.

The Giants are now 7-2 in Cactus League play, while the Padres fall to 4-6.

On Monday, San Francisco will battle the Chicago White Sox, followed by an exhibition game against Team USA on Tuesday. Both of these games have a 3:05 p.m. ET first pitch time to kick off.

Let's see if Webb gets one more solid start in for the Giants before Spring Training wraps up. It would be a pleasing sight for Vitello to see him dial it up and deliver another big-time start in Cactus League play.
