The Pittsburgh Pirates might have a franchise cornerstone on their hands in Konnor Griffin, who’s shown explosive flashes of power in Spring Training this year, after coming off an amazing year in the Minors. Now, the Buccos might want to consider locking him down long term.
Fansided’s Chris Landers predicts that they will offer a 10-year, $130 million deal to Griffin, with an opt out after the eighth year. This would keep Griffin in Pittsburgh through most of his prime for a cheap price.
“Our own Zach Rotman recently pegged a Griffin extension at 10 years and $130 million, with the ability to opt out after eight years. The record for a player yet to make their MLB debut belongs to Jackson Chourio, a former uber-prospect himself who inked an eight-year, $82 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of his rookie season that also included a pair of $25 million options in years nine and 10. Griffin is a better prospect than Chourio, one of the best we've seen in recent memory. So we'll tack on some more money, and instead of club options, we'll give him the power to opt out and hit free agency after eight years — at which point he'll still be just 27/28 and more than capable of landing another huge deal if he becomes the sort of player we expect. This deal allows Griffin to have his cake and eat it too, making plenty of money up front without sacrificing a ton on the back end. The only real question is whether the Pirates want to spend that kind of money,” Landers wrote.
So far in Spring Training, Griffin is slashing .182/.250/.727/.977 with two hits that were both home runs, for four RBI. While that doesn’t seem like much except for amazing power, keep in mind in 2025, Griffin started in A and ended in AA, where he slashed .333/.415/.527/.941 with 23 doubles, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, and 65 stolen bases in 122 games.
Griffin has the chance to be a generational player for Pittsburgh, and if they can lock him up on something near this predicted contract, they better do it ASAP. Especially if they can find a way to lock down Paul Skenes as well, getting two franchise stars to lead the offense and defense for years to come.
Hopefully, they find a way to extend both, and make the Pirates back into the powerhouse they used to be.
