The Indiana Hoosiers entered Sunday afternoon's matchup against the No. 13 ranked Michigan State Spartans with a huge opportunity.
A win would have boosted their chances of making the NCAA Tournament immensely. It was never going to be easy, but the Hoosiers had a chance. Until they didn't.
When all was said and done, Indiana lost the game by a final score of 77-64.
In the first half, Michigan State was able to take a 45-37 lead into halftime. Unfortunately, the Hoosiers simply couldn't figure out how to pull off the comeback. They lost the second half 32-27.
There was a lot of fight in Indiana. It simply wasn't enough. Now, the team's chances of getting into the tournament have become even smaller.
Following the loss to the Spartans, standout guard Lamar Wilkerson spoke out with brutal honesty about the Hoosiers. He knows the team simply isn't playing as good as they are capable of playing.
“I don't know. We're just not playing our best basketball as a group,” Wilkerson said. “There's a lot of things we have to fix. We've played some good teams, other than the one we choked on last week. I don't know.”
Wilkerson put together an impressive second half against the Spartans. He scored 19 points, but that wasn't enough to help Indiana claw its way back into the game.
Tom Izzo took some time to speak out about the Hoosiers and made it clear that they are good enough to make the NCAA Tournament.
“Everybody asks me, ‘Are they good enough to be in the tournament?’” Izzo said. “Read my lips: hell yes.”
Tucker DeVries also spoke out with a bold statement about his team. Even though Indiana is facing tough odds, it won't give up without a fight.
“We've said we're going to go down swinging,” DeVries said. “If we go down swinging and it's not enough, then there's nothing we can do about that now. As long as we really stick together and give it our all these last few games and hopefully give ourselves a chance to be playing in that tournament.”
Next up for the Hoosiers will be a matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at home on Wednesday evening. They're facing a must-win scenario.
