VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — The USD and SDSU men met Saturday in Vermillion, and South Dakota earned the season sweep for the first time since the 96-97 season with a 75-70 win.
The Jackrabbits jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first half, but the Coyotes battled back and cut the deficit to four at halftime. The two traded the lead through the opening minutes of the second half, before the Yotes took the lead for good with a little over 12 minutes to go.
“It’s a different feeling in the locker room when you’re down four vs. 15, right?” USD head coach Eric Peterson said “Very, very different. So, like we have the guys that can do it. They’ve showed all year that they can fight. Nobody’s really blown us out. They just show up and they just keep going.”
Four Coyotes reached double figures with Jordan Crawford and Cameron Fens each scoring 17. Joe Sayler led SDSU with 24.
“We’ll learn from this,” SDSU head coach Bryan Petersen said. “At the end of day, this one stinks. But the tournament starts next week, so we got to put it behind us. This one should hurt for a little bit for our guys, but then we got get ready to roll for a great week next week.”
SDSU plays in the quarterfinals Thursday, and the Coyotes open the tourney on Friday.
